A total of 51 cargo ships carrying many containers are scheduled to enter Yangon Port in February 2023, according to Myanmar Port Authority. This month, nine cargo ships run by New Golden Sea (COSCO), another nine by Sealand Maersk Asia, four by MSC Line, three each by PIL Line, R.C.L Line, Samudra Shipping Line, SITC and TI2 Container Line, two each by BLPL Shipping Line, Ever Green Line, X-Press Feeder and RCL Line and one each by Bay Line, CMA CGM Line, Gold Star Line, IAL Line, Land & Sea and MTT Shipping  Line will enter Yangon Port.

From May 2021, the arrival of ships at terminals in Yangon has increased again.

To fulfil the seaborne trade requirements, three new cargo ships by Maersk Line Myanmar (Sea Land Maersk) started to run in 2021. Myanmar Port Authorities and Yangon inner terminals are providing services to ensure the fast and reliable cargo handling and withdrawal of the containers. Earlier, the larger ships had draft problems preventing their sailing on the Yangon River. The draft extension is up to 10 meters with the new navigation channel accessing the inner Yangon River and the international ocean liners can access the inner port at present.

The YCX marine product transportation process will be launched to connect with ports in four ASEAN countries, including Myanmar on 3 January. The maritime cargo transportation business will be operated along the route of Singapore-Port Klang-Yangon-Yangon-Port Klang-Singapore- Sihanoukville-Singapore. It is carried out by CMA CGM Group, the third largest container shipping company in the world.

It is the Yangon Cambodia Express (YCX) sea route that will directly connect with Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia and Cambodia. CMA CGM Group said that it is planning to operate a ocean-liners to four countries in the Southeast Asian region with the aim of improving imports and exports with rapid delivery of goods due to the introduction of new sea transportation to transport goods.

In addition, transport charges can also be reduced. CMA CGM is a maritime shipping company that uses 257 shipping routes to connect between 420 ports in more than 160 countries. The company will mainly use container ships to transport cargo among ASEAN four countries.

China has opened the Beibu Gulf Port-RCEP regional waterway which will make a brief stopover at the Yangon Port, and four cargo ships will run weekly, according to the announcement of the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar. It was mentioned in the announcement that the successful arrival of the “SITC Venus” cargo ship at the Qinzhou port zone in Beibu Gulf Port, Guangxi Province, on 28 October was the successful opening of the Beibu Gulf Port-Myanmar direct waterway.

Many reviews were released after the opening of the new waterway that another proper waterway was supposedly introduced between the Beibu Gulf Port and the RCEP region. The waterway will run with four cargo ships weekly. The ports of arrival are as follows: Qinzhou-Nansha-Shekou-Khlan-Yangon- Belawan-Khlan-Nansha-Shekou-Hai Phong-Qinzhou.

The disclosure of the new waterway will densify the international maritime network between Beibu Gulf Port and RCEP region, contribute to more convenient export-import channels for goods, and reduce a lot of logistic and storage costs of businesses. Export goods will reach Yangon, Myanmar, 12 days after the departure from the Qinzhou Port via the new waterway and the length of time the journey takes will be reduced by 40 per cent, according to the statement.

The Myanmar government is providing more support to export and import sectors to facilitate the trade flows of locally-produced products. A total of 55 cargo ships will dock at Yangon Port and Thilawa Port in August, according to the Myanma Port Authority.

Myanmar mainly exports maritime products, forest products, agricultural produce and fishery products, while it imports raw textile, construction materials, machinery and commodities. The trade inflows via maritime routes are operating as usual.

As the country boasts of proper sea trade, it benefits the shippers, entrepreneurs, agricultural and livestock businesses and also can create job opportunities. Therefore, 55 cargo ships will dock at five ports in Yangon and two ports in Thilawa Ports this month.

Myanmar exported over 14,110 metric tons of rice worth US$5.247 million via the maritime route in the first week of July, according to the Myanmar Rice Federation-MRF.

For this week, Myanmar delivers rice to the Philippines most with over 11,270 tonnes while over 1,118 tonnes to China, 80 tonnes to Hong Kong, 24 tonnes to Singapore, over 640 tonnes to Italy, 377 tonnes to Germany, 500 tonnes to Poland and 100 tonnes to the Czech Republic.

The country earned about $0.899 million from the export of 2,560 tonnes of broken rice via the maritime route this week and exported 2,060 tonnes and 500 tonnes of broken rice to China and Belgium respectively. Myanmar received $6.146 million by exporting a total of 16,670 tonnes of rice and broken rice this week. Compared to the previous week’s export, it was more than $0.942 million and more than over 2,600 tonnes.

The value of Myanmar’s maritime trade between 1 April and 24 June of the current financial year 2022-2023 surged to US$5.9 billion. The figure reflected an increase of US$1.49 million as against last FY. Sea trade rose from $4.4 billion recorded during the year-ago period, the statistics of Myanmar Customs Department showed. Exports through sea trade were valued at $2.49 billion, imports were registered at $3.4 billion. Myanmar exports agricultural products, fishery products, minerals, livestock, forest products, finished industrial goods, and other products, while it imports capital goods, consumer goods, and raw industrial materials.  The country currently has nine ports involved in sea trade. Yangon Port is the main gateway to Myanmar’s maritime trade, and includes the Yangon inner terminals and the outer Thilawa Port.
