Four companies allowed operating Ygn MFN system under BOT system

Four companies have been allowed to operate under the BOT system for the construction of a smart pole/monopole important for the implementation of a Metropolitan Fibre Network system in the Yangon region. The contract signing ceremony for the construction of the telecommunication tower was launched in the Mingala hall of Yangon region government office on 12 January.

The meeting was attended by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Hla Soe, regional ministers and officials. At the meeting, the chief minister delivered a speech that there should be complying with the terms and conditions of the contract, to launch discipline in the construction of the telecommunication infrastructure in the region and to assist by working together to eradicate illegal activities.

Then, region government secretary U Soe Soe Zaw on behalf of the government signed the agreement with officials from four tender winner companies. Regarding the construction of the telecommunication infrastructure in the Yangon region, the tender has been invited since 2019 to implement under the BOT system to construct the communication towers and to prevent illegal installation. In 2021, it is reported that the contracts have been signed with the four companies that won the tender. Nevertheless, the names of the four tender winning companies have not been released, it is learnt.

No (2) Kunlong Bridge constructed on MyanmarChina border trade route

The No 2 Kunlong Bridge is under construction marking China-Myanmar friendship over Thanlwin River along Lashio-Hsenwi-Kunlong-Chinshwehaw-China border trade road near Kunlong Township in Shan State (North) by China Yunnan Sunny Road Bridge Co., Ltd. The No 2 Kunlong Bridge is located about four miles upstream the No (1) Kunlong Bridge.

The two-lane 286 miles long Baland Cantilever Type Prestressed Concrete Box Girder bridge is 12 metres in width and it has a load capacity of 75 tonnes. Officials of the Bridge Department under the Ministry of Construction and China Embassy to Myanmar signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) to make a feasibility study (FS).

The Chinese ambassador and the Union Minister for Construction signed the statement to support the new Kunlong Bridge project and exchanged it in Nay Pyi Taw on 20 March 2018. According to the agreement, 25 Chinese engineers conducted the feasibility study in the project area between 22 March 2019 and 15 May 2019. The government has provided compensation to the owners of land, buildings and farms located in the project area using the allocated budget.

Construction of new Mingalar Market completed 63%

According to the officials, the government is constructing a new Mingalar Market in Mingala Taungnyunt Township spending K68 billion, and about 63 per cent of the market has been completed. The market will be a 17-storey building with a two-storey basement car park and is being constructed by modern machinery, expert engineers and skilled labourers following the COVID-19 health rules of the Ministry of Health and Sports.

There will be banks, restaurants and supermarkets on the ground floor. From 6th to 13th floor including two-storey basement car park can accommodate more than 700 cars. There will also be shops and warehouses on the 9th and 10th floors while the offices will be on 11st and 13th floors.

There will be more than 1,000 shops from the 5th to 8th floors managed by the construction companies. The YCDC will relocate the vendors from the ground floor to the 4th floor who lost their shops in old Mingalar Market, which caught fire. The officials now speed up the building construction. If the new Mingalar Market is completed, it can benefit more than 40,000 people, including vendors, staff, and customers, so the market will become alive more than before.

Eindu-Kawkareik road, part of greater Mekong sub-region east-west economic corridor, completed

The inauguration ceremony for Eindu-Kawkareik road, connecting Hpa-an District and Kawkareik District in Kayin State,
was held yesterday morning in line with the COVID-19 guidelines. The ceremony was attended by Union Minister for
Construction U Shwe Lay, Chairman of the Kayin State Administration Council U Saw Myint Oo and members of the council, officials from the ministry and relevant departments/organizations and residents.

At the meeting, Union Minister U Shwe Lay said the Eindu-Kawkareik road is part of the Greater Mekong Sub-region East-West Economic Corridor and also part of the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral road. Viet Nam, Laos and Thailand have completed their parts Eindu-Kawkareik road, part of greater Mekong sub-region east-west economic corridor, completed in the East-West Economic Corridor as Asian Highway Standard Class 2-level.

Myanmar has just upgraded its parts of the road. He said the upgraded Eindu-Kawkareik road would be a major trade route connecting with neighbouring Thailand. It would speed up the flow of goods and reduce transport costs for regional and international vehicles. As part of the project, upgrading Kyondoe port ring road will also benefit from transporting goods from Laos and Viet Nam to Mawlamyine in a short time at a low cost. The upgraded Eindu-Kawkareik road to an international standard road (Asian Highway Standard Class 2) is 64.735 kilometres long and made of nylon asphalt (AC) type.

Japan-based Aeon Company postpones construction of shopping mall in Yangon

Japan-based AEON MALL Co., Ltd. has postponed plans to build a shopping mall in Yangon, according to Kyodo News. AEON MALL plans to begin construction of the mall this summer, a source familiar with the project told Kyodo News. The project aims to be the largest shopping mall in Myanmar and a joint venture between (Shwe Taung Group) and AEON MALL Co, .Ltd of Japan.

The source said that although the Japanese company had no plans to withdraw from the project, it would need to partially revise its plans to adapt to Myanmar’s consumer preferences and economic conditions. The project is worth US $ 180 million , according to Kyodo News.

Shwe Taung Group has a 30% stake in the project. Last year, Shwe Taung Group announced that Aeon Mall Myanmar Co., Ltd and AEON MALL would acquire a 70% stake. The five-storey shop will be built at the corner of Shweli Road and Ayeyar Wun Road in Dagon Seikkan Township, Yangon was expected to open in 2023.

Construction of crop dehydration factory completed by 65% in ChaungU Township

The construction of crop dehydration factory is 65 per cent finished in ChaungU Township, Sagaing Region and about 2,000 tonnes of crops are daily dried on a trial run at present. The factory is started to be developed on 28 December 2018, under the endorsement of the Sagaing Region Investment Committee, said managing director U Aung Naing Oo of Aung Nagani Co., Ltd. The dehydration factory is aimed at fetching a good price in the export market. It will export quality vegetable to foreign countries.

About 30 people will be employed upon the completion of the factory. The crop processing was earlier delayed due to the lack of dehydration factory. They faced market loss owing to the inferior quality then. The dehydration factory is set up to enhance the socio-economy of the farmers and explore more potential markets. Sagaing Region Investment Committee endorsed Aung Nagani Co., Ltd to execute crops drying, categorizing and rice milling and processing activities on 28 December 2018, bringing in the capital of K726.44 million (including US$ 0.113 million).

The factory is located at No. 2038, Kywalkyayoe yard, Ngaya n village-tract, ChaungU Township, Sagaing Region, according to the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration. To simplify the verification of investment projects, the Myanmar Investment Law allows the region and state Investment Committees to grant permissions for local and foreign proposals, where the initial investment does not exceed K6 billion, or $5 million.

World-class integrated industrial city being developed in Pathein

The Pathein Industrial City (PIC) project is being developed by Ayeyarwaddy Development Public Company Limited in Pathein, Ayeyawady Region. The Pathein Industrial City (PIC) project is being implemented in three phases and is designed to include an international scale industrial zone, a river port, commercial and residential zone. Upon completion of the project, which is being established on 6,700 acres of land along the Pathein-Ngapudaw Road in Pathein Township, Ayeyawady Region, with an investment of US$ 500 million, it is expected to create over one million job opportunities for local people, according to an official from Ayeyarwaddy Development Public Company Limited.

Phase I of the project is being developed as an industrial zone which will cover about 1,200 acres of land, and the construction work has been about 70 per cent finished. The international port is scheduled to be built in the industrial zone project, and it is being developed for a new role in the regional economy. The Phase I of the project covers an area of 1,200 acres of land. At present, the entire 1,200 acres on Phase I are nearing completion and the factories are operational. When the entire Phase I is fully operational, it will provide employment opportunities for between 150,000 and 300,000 local people. Once completed, the project will create thousands of jobs for local people in Ayeyawady Region.

This project will greatly contribute to the economic growth and employment prospects of the whole region according to the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ayeyarwaddy Development Public Company Limited. The Pathein Industrial City (PIC) project is located 8 km from Pathein Port, 7 km from Pathein railway station and 17 km from Pathein Airport. The project will include garment factories, rice mills, fish processing plants, glass mills, cold storage facilities, plastics factories, fertilizer factories and furniture factories. Construction of four factories in Phase I of the project has been finished. The construction of garment factories that can employ 3,000 to 5,000 workers has been completed. Four more factories are expected to be completed before the rainy season.

A special garment zone is being built, and about 50 acres for rice production is being researched by China in the project area. Phase I of the project has reportedly been 70 per cent completed, with Chinese, Korean, Japanese and other international companies investing in the zone. Phase II and Phase III of the project will be the future development of commercial, residential and industrial zone which will cover about 5,500 acres of land. Phase II of the project will include affordable housing projects, hotels, resorts and shopping malls. After Phase I of the project, Phase II will be implemented in 2021, including the low-cost housing projects and shopping malls. The developers were urged to conduct environmental and social impacts of the project with the aim of lessening negative effects and take grievances of local people into consideration.

With rapid urbanization of Pathein City and an urgent need for extension of urban residential housings on the west bank of Ngawun River, the Pathein Bridge-2 was built by the Ministry of Construction. The integrated industrial city project is expected to promote infrastructural development and boost tourism in the region. The local government has been attempting to upgrade basic infrastructure projects in the region, pouring the majority of its budget into reconstruction and upgrade of the road networks, to make operational in all seasons. Infrastructural development of a region plays a vital role in helping the country’s GDP increase and uplifting the standard of living of local people. Development of infrastructural projects provides economic growth, creates job prospects for local residents and lifts them out of poverty.

Myanmar, China sign MoU on feasibility study for Mandalay-Kyaukpyu railway project

Myanmar and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to conduct a feasibility study for Mandalay-Kyaukpyu railway project on 10 January. Union Minister for Transport and Communication said that the
Muse-Mandalay-Kyaukpyu section is an essential project for the Belt and Road Initiative of Chinese President Mr Xi Jinping and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.

The bilateral relation between the two countries will become stronger through cooperation. He added that the MoU for a feasibility study for Mandalay-Kyaukpyu railway was signed between Myanmar Railways and China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co.,Ltd (CREEC) and it also should conduct the study in details for the natural environment and social impacts. Then, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar talked about the first visit of President Mr Xi Jinping to Myanmar in January 2020.

The railway section located in Yunnan of China will be completed in 2023 and trains will run between Myanmar and China. By connecting railways between China and Myanmar by building railroads inside Myanmar, it will connect Myanmar with big Eurasia market of 1.4 billion population and it will help Myanmar economy grow as well as assist the better life of Myanmar people. The feasibility study report of 2-year term MoU must submit within 18 months including the study for impacts of environment, mental, social, and cultural heritage.

Completion of glass bridge near Goteik Viaduct expected in 2022

Myanmar’s first glass bridge, located near the Goteik Viaduct in Nawngcho (Northern Shan State), is expected to be completed by October 2022. The bridge, developed with Chinese designers and glass bridge experts, will be built on a project area of 17 acres and is estimated to cost approximately $5 million. Cherry Muse Company will oversee the project which also houses restaurants, parks, rainbow slides and vantage points for sight seeing.

According to the tourism market in-charge from the Cherry Muse Company, their company has sent over 1,000 tourists to China’s Glass Bridge on a yearly basis. There are many issues when entering China like the need to queue and take medical tests. They are implementing this project with the thought that it would be better if Myanmar has a similar glass bridge. It would be cost effective as well.

Cherry Muse will bear half of the cost of the bridge and the remaining half will be offered as shares. A memorandum of understanding for the project has been signed and it will lead to the creation of around 300 jobs. This glass bridge will be beside the world-famous Goteik Viaduct and you will be able to see the viaduct from here. Myanmar’s version will feature a glass pavement and a different design form those in China.

Sittoung River-Crossing Bridge (Yedashe) unveiled to mark 73rd Independence Day

Bago Region Chief Minister U Win Thein and officials opened the Sittoung River-Crossing Bridge (Yedashe) yesterday to mark 73rd Anniversary of Independence Day. The bridge was constructed with a total of K3,500 million– K1,350 million by Bago Region government fund and K2,150 million by the Union Government Fund. It was built by Special Bridge Group (6) of Bridge Department under the Ministry of Construction.
The bridge is 800 ft in length, 30 ft in width, 24 ft for roadway and has a three-foot long pedestrian walkway on each side. The waterway clearance of the bridge is 28 metres (92 ft) in width and 3.7 metres (12 ft) in height. The steel truss bridge can accommodate up to HS-25. The bridge can facilitate the transport of people and develop the socio-economic, health and education sectors. The bridge is on Yedashe-Kayinchaung-Leiktoe Road and will connect Taungoo-Leiktoe-Yardo-Hopong Road via inter- district road No (2).—Tin Soe (Bago)
